Couples counseling can provide the members of a partnership with valuable support, insight, and space to safely learn about each other in the interest of fostering deeper connection.

MORE ABOUT COUPLES COUNSELING

We are often wounded or hurt in relationship, and we can find healing in relationship, too. When we feel safe enough to share our vulnerability with our partner, we have the opportunity to explore, to grow, to connect. And the opposite is equally valid. In the poignant words of trauma specialist Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score, when “…you are frightened and unwanted [your brain] specializes in managing feelings of fear and abandonment.”

The reasons why we feel disconnected in relationship are many. From concerns around unmet needs, recreation of our childhood wounding and trauma, infidelity and resentment, inability to trust, disagreements over finances or parenting, work and career stress, competing values, incomplete communication styles—the obstacles that get in the way of loving connection present real challenges. In couples therapy, we will work together to understand where you and your partner get derailed, and how to unite you in meaningful connection.

What couples and therapists too often do not see is that most fights are really protests over emotional disconnection...
